The Mayan Train is a new infrastructure project in Mexico that is still developing. This initiative of economic and tourist development will connect the main cities and archaeological sites of the Yucatan Peninsula.
The train will travel through 5 states Quintana Roo, Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, and Yucatan and it is intended to stretch on tourist’s stay in these regions. Moreover, the Mayan Train is an ambitious project that will cause a major impact on economic growth, generating an approximate of 20 thousand permanent jobs.
Also, it will communicate popular archaeological Mayan sites such as Balancan, Chichen Itza, Palenque, Tulum, and Calakmul. As a result, the government expects to attract around 3 million national and international tourists per year.
It is important to mention that the Mayan Train will not cause a severe damage to our environment since the engineers behind it plan to use compensation measures. Additionally, the train will make use of existent rights-of-way to reduce the environmental impact.
The Mayan Train and its characteristics
The Mayan Train will feature a biodiesel and hybrid train engine and it will run 932 miles of track. The train will pass through a total of 15 stations going through 264 miles of jungle, 277 miles of the Caribbean, and 405 miles of the Gulf.
This project will provide service to both, tourists and local passengers as well as load services. The Mayan Train will have an approximate cost of $6 to $8 billion. The budget will be obtained from the private and public sector.
The construction of this massive project should begin in early 2019. Although it’s in the plans to complete this project in 4 years, this is only an estimation.
Mexico currently ranks as the 6th place in tourism worldwide. Therefore, projects such as the Mayan Train will generate a higher impact on the tourist industry. Also, this is a huge step into a better infrastructure system.
The Mayan Train is a striking project that will link cities with great cultural and historical importance. Projects as the metro bus system and the Mayan Train will position Quintana Roo as an advanced city in the tourism sector.
